Range Days vs Trend Days: A Trader’s Checklist

Jun 25, 2026 · 7 min read

Same pair, different day type. Misclassifying the day is a common way good setups become bad P&L.

Early tells

Opening range width, distance from prior day’s value area, and whether overnight inventory is one-sided can hint at trend potential. None of these is perfect. Treat them as soft priors.

Tactics that fit the day

Fade extremes more carefully on trend days; chase breakouts more carefully on range days. Your playbook should switch with the regime, not with your mood.

Hard invalidations

If you labelled a range day and price accepts outside the range with expanding volume and follow-through, update the label. Stubbornness is not analysis.

End-of-day honesty

Journal whether your day-type call was right and whether you traded accordingly. Pattern recognition improves from feedback, not from screenshots of winners only.
